Applies to all German states

TV-L covers employees in all German federal states except Hesse (which has TV-H). It governs pay, working hours and leave for staff employed directly by a state (Land). Universities and most public research institutes are TV-L employers.

Social security contributions

In Germany, health, pension, unemployment and long-term care insurance are split evenly between employer and employee. Your contribution is approximately 20 % of gross pay. The calculator shows your employee share only.

TV-L vs. TVöD

TV-L (states) and TVöD (federal/municipal) use similar pay grades but different pay tables. E 13 TV-L pays slightly less than E 13 TVöD Bund. Both are negotiated separately and increases do not automatically carry over.

Frequently asked questions

What does a university researcher earn on TV-L in 2026?

A postdoc or staff scientist at E 13 TV-L earns between approx. €4,628 (Level 1) and €6,079 (Level 5) gross per month in 2026. After tax and social security a single person in tax class I at full time typically receives €2,900–€3,700 net.

Which pay grade (Entgeltgruppe) applies to me?

E 13 is the standard grade for positions requiring a university degree (Master/diploma/PhD). E 14 applies to more senior research or management roles. Technicians and administrative staff are typically classified between E 5 and E 10. Your contract will state the applicable Entgeltgruppe.

How long does it take to advance from Level 1 to Level 2?

Under TV-L, the progression from Level 1 to Level 2 in E 13 takes 1 year of relevant employment. Level 2 to 3 takes 2 years, and Level 3 to 4 takes 3 years. Previous relevant employment at other TV-L or comparable employers can be credited.
