Heads of department (Chefärzte) are usually covered by individual contracts rather than TV-Ärzte.
TV-Ärzte applies to physicians employed at university hospitals (Universitätskliniken) that are members of the TV-Ärzte agreement negotiated by the Marburger Bund union. It is separate from the TV-Ärzte/VKA which covers municipal hospital doctors. Working hours are 40 hrs/week under this agreement.
At Ä 1 Level 1 an Assistenzarzt earns approximately €5,300 gross per month in 2026 under TV-Ärzte Uniklinik. Yes – the collective agreement provides for additional supplements for night shifts, Sunday/holiday work and on-call duties (Bereitschaftsdienst). These are not included in this calculator, which only covers the regular monthly base pay.
TV-Ärzte Uniklinik covers doctors at state university hospitals (academic medical centres). TV-Ärzte VKA covers doctors at municipal (VKA) hospitals. Both are negotiated by the Marburger Bund but use separate pay tables; VKA rates are generally slightly different from Uniklinik rates.
