Who is covered by TVöD Bund?

TVöD Bund applies to employees of federal authorities, agencies and institutions — for example the Federal Employment Agency (BA), customs (Zoll), federal research institutes (BfR, PTB, BAM) and many others. It is separate from TVöD VKA which covers municipal employers.

Social security & VBL pension

Employees also contribute to the VBL (Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder), the supplementary public-sector occupational pension. The employee share is 1.81 % of gross pay (VBL West) or 1.81 % (VBL East). The calculator includes this.

Annual special payment

TVöD § 20 provides for an annual special payment (Jahressonderzahlung) paid in November: 90 % for E 1–8, 80 % for E 9a–12, and 60 % for E 13+ of one monthly gross pay. From 2026 the rates are 95 %, 90 % and 75 % respectively.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TVöD Bund and TVöD VKA?

Both use the same pay grades (E 1–E 15) but different pay tables. TVöD Bund (federal) generally pays slightly more than TVöD VKA (municipal). Collective bargaining is conducted separately and pay increases do not always coincide.

How many working hours per week apply under TVöD Bund?

The standard working week under TVöD Bund is 39 hours. Part-time employees receive a proportional salary. The calculator automatically defaults to 39 hrs/wk and lets you enter part-time hours or a percentage directly.

Is prior professional experience recognised when I start a new TVöD position?

Yes. Relevant prior experience from comparable employers can be credited up to Level 3 on appointment (§ 16 TVöD). Your HR department decides the exact level placement. The decision is typically based on the number of years in equivalent roles.
